It is not a gun you take to the range to put a few hundred/thousand rounds through for fun. I have one of the current production ones and I like it just fine. If you can live with the limits of the design it is a great little gun. Fourth the barrel is thin and will bend easier than those of other guns and there are no sling swivels so it is best to carry it any distance packed in the stock and in a bag/pack.
I have found it best to hold onto the barrel nut with my thumb and index finger and then use the rest of my hand to push against the receiver to bring the gun into my shoulder. With the barrel you have to be careful as it heats up with continuous firing. You have to be careful holding onto the receiver as you can move the magazine enough to cause feed problems. Third, there is nothing to hold onto at the front of the gun besides the barrel or front of the receiver. Second, you have to make sure that you fully insert the magazine or you get feeding problems.
First, it is oddly shaped and has a long length of pull compared to other. Here are some of the problems I see with the AR-7 as a plinking gun. I take it with me to the range most of the time, but I will only run about 50 rounds through it to practice then switch to my Marlin 795 because I did not buy the Henry as my primary plinking gun. If you want to put a few thousand rounds through it you can and they are fun to shoot.
